Presentation
The American Institute of Bakings internship program was started in 1999
to enable international graduates of AIBs 16-week Baking Science and Technology
course to gain on the job experience in a commercial baking environment.
AIB grads have worked in New York and Chicago baking facilities during
the past year and have profited enormously from this exposure to food production.
After graduation from the Baking Science and Technology course, in May
and December of each year, graduates are offered practical training in
the form of internships by various baking/allied companies. The company
provides either a monthly salary or living accommodations and a stipend
for food and miscellaneous expenses. Exposure to several different aspects
of the baking industry from R&D to marketing is most desired by graduates.
Graduates must depart the U.S. 30 days after graduation unless an extension
is requested through the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.
If the graduate is not already employed in his home country, the company
can offer a full time position to the AIB graduate. Conversion of
the M-1 visa to an H-1 visa, allowing a prolonged stay of up to 6 years
or more is then possible. The local Immigration and Naturalization
Service offices can provide details.
Eligibility for AIB scholarships
1. International students need to have a baccalaureate degree, (4-year)
in food science, food technology or a related discipline.
2. Candidates for scholarships also need to agree to work in the baking/allied
industries in the U.S. for at least two years after
graduation.
3. Proficiency in English must be demonstrated by obtaining a score
of at least 750 on the Test of English for International Communication
(TOEIC)
or an equivalent Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
score (550), or completion of AIBs 18 lesson Applied Baking Technology
course.
Applications procedures for AIB scholarships
1. Complete the online application at www.aibonline.org, or fax or mail
the admissions application to AIB
2. Wire, or provide credit card information, for a $500 tuition deposit
and a $45 registration fee to AIB. The $500 tuition deposit is refundable
if the student decides to withdraw prior to class starting date.
3. After receiving the admissions and scholarship applications, and
the $545 registration fee and tuition deposit, AIB will mail the student
the I-20MN form. The I-20MN form is then
to be taken by the student to the U.S.
Embassy to apply for the M-1 visa.
4. The M-1 visa is necessary to allow the student to attend either the
16-week Baking Science and Technology class or the 10-week Maintenance
Engineering class. The M-1 visa will allow the student to remain
30 days in the U.S. after graduation from AIB. In order to be able
to work in the U.S. the graduate, with assistance from the hiring company,
will apply for the appropriate visa, H-1B,
return to their home country and then return to the U.S. and work.
Approximate time for the visa to be processed is 2 months.
